The Irish construction sector faces a shortage of thousands of workers over the next four years

The Irish construction sector faces a shortage of thousands of workers over the next four years.

Research conducted by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) estimated that there would be a shortage of almost 2,000 construction and property surveyors.

Over the next few years, it is projected that 3,740 new surveying jobs will be created by growth in the sector, but that 1,577 new graduates only would enter the workforce.

The report’s findings were based on an annual growth rate of 3 per cent. If the economy were to grow at 4 per cent over that period, the shortage would be twice as big. The European Commission has predicted that Ireland will grow by 5.7 per cent this year.

Róisín Murphy, a senior lecturer at the School of Surveying and Construction Management at the Dublin Institute of Technology, said that the projected shortage would be the biggest constraint on employment growth in the sector.
